New VP West and Interim ED selected

CUSID congratulates Monica Ferris (University of British Columbia) for her election as the new Vice-President, Western Region for the 2005-2006 season, and Julieta Chan (Hart House, University of Toronto) for her appointment as the interim Executive Director.

Monica was elected in an online by-election held 6-13 May and replaces Nick Fowler (University of Alberta), who resigned the position 12 April. She will serve until the next CUSID West election to be held at a regional meeting in Spring 2006.

Julieta assumes her position in the absence of an ED on the current sitting executive, succeeding Nicholas Tam (University of Alberta). A formal by-election for the position will be held at the Fall General Meeting.

Please be advised that Ombuds Committee applications are now open, with a deadline of Wednesday, 25 May. See this CUSIDnet thread for details.

Ottawa wins 2005 World Championship; UBC to host 2007

CUSID congratulates the team of Erik Eastaugh and Jamie Furniss from the University of Ottawa for placing first at the World Universities Debating Championship, making them the third Canadian team to do so in the event’s 25-year history.

This year’s 312-team WUDC, hosted by Multimedia University in Malaysia, was the largest in the event’s history. Two other Canadian teams made the break: Hart House B (Joanna Nairn and Michael Kotrly) proceeded to the Grand Final, where they faced Ottawa Law, Oxford D and Cambridge A; Alberta A (Stephanie Wanke and Alex Ragan) appeared in octo-finals.

CUSID is also proud to announce that the University of British Columbia has won the bid to host the 2007 World Championship, and wishes the tournament organizers the best of luck as the championship returns to Canada for the first time since 2002.

CUSID.ca and CUSIDnet is now being hosted by Tera-Byte, based in Edmonton. I would like to thank all those who offered proposals for hosting CUSIDnet. Although we didn’t go with your proposals, we do very much appreciate your offers.

In the coming days there still may be some hiccups as I further configure the server. I will be in contact with the 2004/2005 ED, Nick Tam, about ongoing issues with the new services.

Thank you for your patience.
